Jungkook Issues Apology After Wearing Controversial Hat at j-hope’s Concert Rehearsal

On June 13, BTS’s Jungkook made a surprise appearance at the first night of j-hope’s “‘HOPE ON THE STREET’ FINAL” encore concert, held at the Goyang Sports Complex. But while fans were thrilled to see the youngest BTS member show up to support his bandmate, controversy quickly followed after a rehearsal photo began circulating online—featuring Jungkook wearing a hat with the phrase “MAKE TOKYO GREAT AGAIN.”

The phrase drew immediate backlash due to its resemblance to the politically charged slogan “Make America Great Again,” popularized by U.S. President Donald Trump. In the context of Japan, such a phrase can evoke painful historical memories, particularly for Koreans, as it recalls the era of Japanese imperialism and Korea's colonization from 1910 to 1945.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Jungkook took to Weverse in the early hours of June 14 (KST) to address the matter directly. In a heartfelt message, he expressed sincere remorse for his actions:

“I sincerely apologize for the disappointment and discomfort I caused many people through the phrase that was written on the hat I wore during today’s rehearsal,” he wrote. “I was lacking, and I was careless.”

The global star emphasized that he had not fully considered the historical and political implications of the phrase and confirmed that the hat was “disposed of immediately.” Jungkook further vowed to be more mindful in the future, stating, “I will think more deeply before each and every one of my actions.”

Fans around the world have responded with a mix of concern, understanding, and continued support, acknowledging the sincerity in his apology and his swift effort to take responsibility.

This incident underscores the complexities of global fame, especially when fashion choices intersect with sensitive political and historical contexts. Jungkook’s response reflects not only personal accountability but also a deep respect for the gravity of history—and the hearts of those he may have unintentionally hurt.

As BTS members continue their individual and group activities, moments like these are a reminder of the scrutiny that public figures face and the importance of education, awareness, and humility in the spotlight.
